Aggression vs. Recklessness in Batting: Know the Difference

Batting in cricket often requires an aggressive mindset, but there’s a fine line between controlled aggression and reckless shot-making. Many players confuse the two, leading to poor shot selection and unnecessary dismissals.

What is Aggression in Batting?

Aggression is about playing to your strengths while making calculated decisions. It involves:

Understanding Match Situations – Attacking when conditions allow it and rotating strike when needed.
Shot Selection – Picking high-percentage shots based on the bowler, field placements, and pitch conditions.
Controlled Risk-Taking – Gradually increasing the level of risk while ensuring execution is strong.
Confidence in Execution – Aggressive shots are backed by practice and muscle memory, not impulse.

Stop Complaining Before the Game: The Mindset Shift You Need

Cricket is as much a mental game as it is physical. Yet, how often do you hear players bringing up their work stress, health struggles, or life problems just minutes before the game starts? It might feel like harmless chats, but in reality, it could be setting you back before the first ball is even bowled.

Why Does This Happen?

I feel that warm-ups often become a time to catch up for certain players and complaints naturally come up. But players often do this to ease their nerves and create an excuse mindset. Players mentally prepare for failure by blaming external factors before the game even begins.

Patience vs Conservative Mindset in Batting – What’s the Difference?

In my experience, many batters confuse patience with playing conservatively. While they may look similar at the start, they are fundamentally different approaches that lead to very different outcomes.

Patience is about building confidence throughout the innings and trusting your abilities. It means being selective, understanding the game situation, and waiting for the right moment to attack. A patient batter is in control, aware of their scoring options, and plays smart cricket.

Do You Plan or Just Prepare Before a Game?

Many players train hard, focusing only on preparation. But preparation is often reactive—we work on things we’re concerned about or struggling with. Planning, on the other hand, is proactive—it considers strengths, match conditions, and strategies for success.

What’s Considered Actual Progress in Batting?

It’s easy to get carried away with batting progress meaning big performances like 50s or 100s but actual progress happens very gradually. One of my trainees was struggling to enjoy batting as he was loosing patience and also was mostly out of balance while playing the game. After working on his mental and physical/technical skills, he scored same amount of runs but he appreciated the feeling of that innings which made him feel confident and stable in his skills.

Progress is like very small dots but it could vary in size sometimes, but mostly very small dots which brings out the performance later when players connect them with consistent efforts. I m very grateful that I can witness this in my journey.

How to prepare best for a cricket game?

Players in ASN Academy prepare with a long term approach. There is no rocket science in preparation, its simple and just needs to be understood in the right way.

So, if a player is consistent with goal oriented trainings without missing many sessions, then they automatically get prepared for an ideal cricket game’s performance. Otherwise it is just a matter of chance when they perform and that doesn’t not bring consistency and fulfilment.

Why is cricket coaching for kids important?

I always believed in skills rather than talent. Through out my playing experience I witnessed many good cricketers who started well in their young age but couldn’t make it to achieve great status. I may sound a bit judgmental, but that’s a reality. Kids getting proper coaching at their young age not only mean that they have to learn only technical aspects but also they must know about game awareness, fitness expectations and winners mindset to absorb failures.

Therefore right coaching can help a kid becoming better version of himself/herself sooner than later in this competitive cricket world.
