Patience vs Conservative Mindset in Batting – What’s the Difference?

In my experience, many batters confuse patience with playing conservatively. While they may look similar at the start, they are fundamentally different approaches that lead to very different outcomes.

Patience is about building confidence throughout the innings and trusting your abilities. It means being selective, understanding the game situation, and waiting for the right moment to attack. A patient batter is in control, aware of their scoring options, and plays smart cricket.

A Conservative Mindset, on the other hand, is all about survival. It comes from fear—fear of getting out, fear of taking risks. This mindset often leads to hesitation, missing scoring opportunities, and eventually, either getting out or wasting too many deliveries. Instead of trusting their skills, the batter is just trying to hang in there.

A patient mindset allows you to adapt and make smart decisions throughout your innings. A conservative mindset limits your game and stops you from playing naturally.

So, next time you bat, ask yourself—am I being patient, or am I just playing it safe?
